Thunderstorm in New York

last updated : Tue 04 June 2002

After a few sticky days in New York we had the most incredible thunderstorm one Friday night at the end of May 2002 which cleared the air out. The first few storms came round the top of Manhattan and they could be seen in the distance flashing lightning and looking ominous.

Eventually one came off Jersey and hit the Island smack on. I grabbed the camera and headed for the roof - probably not the smartest thing to do in a thunderstorm - anyway after many shots that missed the lightning or with the exposure way off I managed to get a image that looked half way similar to what I was seeing.

This is looking from my roof top over Long Island towards JFK. Both lightning strikes hit within a split second of each other and if you look carefully you can see the side branches forking off the main strikes.

Taken with a Nikon D1X, f7.1, 28mm with a 10 sec exposure at ISO 125.
