Installing Windows 8 Developer Preview On a Virtual Machine

I wanted to load up the new developers preview of Windows 8 on a virtual machine but ran into problems getting it to install on Virtual PC. I finally got it running as a virtual machine like this:

 

Download the Windows 8 ISO from Microsoft and install Sun's Virtual Box.

 

Start up virtual box and click new giving the VM a name and click next (ensure that the version is set to Windows 7 64bit)

 

Enter the memory size (at least 2 GB). On the virtual drive screen accept the defaults except change the disk size to 60GB and click create.

 

 

 

Once the machine is created, highlight it in the Virtual Box Manager and click settings and under storage set the CD/DVD Drive to the location of your Developers Preview ISO. Under the system tab you should set at least 2 CPUs to give it the performance it needs to make it responsive.

When you start up the virtual machine you should see the install start to take place so just fill in the fields as normal. 

 

 

The whole process takes about 30mins and you should end up with a shot like this:
